Adult Swim is known for its weird and unusually quirky shows. That's why I was excited yet slightly hesitant to watch Common Side Effects.

First released on February 2nd, 2025, the series is the first new release to come from Adult Swim this year and was first on my list of new shows to try. While there are plenty of shows returning, the focus of this is just on new shows airing in 2025.

If you didn't know, Common Side Effects was created by Joseph Bennett and Steve Hely. The show is also executive-produced and stars Mike Judge. If you didn't know, Judge is the creator of King of the Hill and has been a long-time fixture in the adult animation sphere. Most notably, Judge also voiced Hank Hill on the series.

When I started watching, I had no idea Judge was even involved, yet from the very second we meet a particular character, you'll recognize Judge's voice. Honestly, it feels like a little bit of fun in an otherwise intense series.

Common Side Effects is definitely worth the watch.

Adult Swim has had some real duds in its time, but Common Side Effects is not one of them. It feels like a refreshing step forward especially in the world of adult animation. Most of us are used to sitcoms and more comedy-based series, but Common Side Effects is not that. It's a much more intense and action-packed series.

The story follows Marshall who discovered this rare mushroom that has the ability to seemingly heal anyone or anything. In the first episode, we're introduced to Frances who is quick to not believe him until she sees it in action. From there, the story follows Marshall as he's on the run from many people as we know a lot of companies would go out of business if the mushroom were to become available to everyone. Additionally, Frances is dealing with a stressful job, trying to find Marshall and caring for her sick mother.

While the plot is interesting, the animation style is as well. It feels like the show has a more muted style. Coupled with that, there are some interesting sequences when people eat the mushrooms which makes for a beautiful visual display. Honestly, the style of this show is something that won't appeal to everyone but once you get used to it, you won't be able to stop watching.

Frankly, there is so much going on with Common Side Effects but the show doesn't feel busy. It feels real and sometimes, that's exactly what you're craving. Currently, the show has 5 episodes out as they're airing Sunday nights on Adult Swim before heading to Max on Monday mornings. If you're looking for something new that's a bit unorthodox in its story, then Common Side Effects needs to be on your watchlist.
