Family Guy season 23 early preview (plus why it's not coming in 2024)

The Seth MacFarlane comedy won't be dancing on our screens this fall. See when it will return.

Since 1999, Family Guy has been part of my TV lineup due to its raw, uncut humor and the dysfunctional lives of the Griffin family, just trying to fit in with the rest of Rhode Island but often finding themselves in weird situations. They might be rough around the edges and disperse that New England humor, but the Griffins are still a family. Peter may not be the best dad on the planet, but he provides and shows his love differently.

As we drive into the Fall 2024 edition of Fox's Animation Domination Block on Sunday nights, Family Guy season 23 isn't part of it and was done to make room for Fox's new show, Universal Basic Guys. This scheduling decision is a massive shock to fans, as the animated comedy created by Seth MacFarlane has been a staple of the block, sharing the two-hour space with The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers.

Earlier this year, Fox pushed Family Guy to Wednesdays during midseason, a move that hasn't been perpetrated since 2009. Just like making space for Universal Basic Guys for fall, the reasoning behind the Wednesday bump was to introduce another new Fox animation, Grimsburg.

Season 23 is happening, just not this year. Find out when the iconic will be returning to Fox.

What to know about Family Guy season 23-trailer, logline, and more

Yep, season 23 is happening, and it'll be a big one. The problem is that we have to wait longer for its premiere, coming in January 2024, where it will rightfully be positioned back to its 9 PM EST/8 PM CST time slot on Sunday, reuniting with The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers.

Fox dropped season 23's logline in late July, along with the plot-filled trailer for the upcoming season. The six-minute clip references seasons past and hints at the upcoming season's episodes. In Family Guy's tradition and legacy, you can expect the wonderful weirdness and satirical, sardonic humor made possible by the writing team.

You can see both the logline and trailer below.

"Peter accidentally exposes his inability to throw a ball, Meg starts dating the giant chicken’s son, and Chris loses his earring in a Lord of the Rings-inspired escapade. Additionally, Stewie finds out his stuffed bear, Rupert, was made in China and makes it his mission to take him back there to meet his family. The series will also parody The White Lotus, as the Griffin family vacations at a luxury resort, where Stewie worries that his wealthy new friends plan to sacrifice him in a volcano."

All that I'm asking for is a song-and-dance number performed by Stewie and Brian for the China installment. It would be the perfect opportunity to bring back a highlight that made Family Guy original and fun.

On top of the promising new season, Glen Powell, Pete Davidson, rapper Sir-Mix-A-Lot, Kyle Chandler, and Patrick Dempsey will be among the few of the guest stars.

But don't think 2024 will exit without giving us FG fans any new content. On October 14th, Hulu will release an exclusive Halloween special ("Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Cheater") as part of its annual Huluween celebration. Then, in December, the streamer will launch another exclusive holiday-themed episode for Christmas ("Gift of the White Guy"). While other details surrounding the episodes are mum, sneak peeks are edited in the trailer.

Until the season 23 premiere and the holiday specials are dropped, you can catch Family Guy reruns on Comedy Central, FXX, and Hulu.
