X-Men 97 season 2 return date rumored to be delayed (but we’re not buying it)

A new rumor suggests X-Men '97 season 2 could be facing a major delay, though we're not sold on the validity of the source.

Typically, we’re all for rumors about our favorite Marvel series as many scoopers out there have a solid track record for dropping rumors that turned out to be true. However, the latest rumor surrounding the future of X-Men ’97 just is not sitting well with us.

According to a new rumor from Nexus Point News, sources are reporting the highly anticipated second season of the Emmy-nominated animated series has “been pushed to a 2026 premiere date due to changes being made to the story and scripts.” The outlet reports that the delay in the show’s return is caused by new head writer Matthew Chauncey having to rewrite scripts for the season which was previously outlined by original creator Beau DeMayo, who was fired from the show before its premiere this spring.

While this could prove to be true, we definitely recommend fans take this rumor with a grain of salt as we have a hard time believing that Marvel Studios would truly delay the show’s return to 2026 – especially after the success of the show’s first season and knowing season 3 is already in development.

Details about the show’s production timeline have been hard to come by, but it was revealed during the D23 Expo in August that season 2 was deep into development and would take roughly 12-18 months to complete. Meanwhile, in May executive producer Brad Winderbaum told Collider that they were already in the middle of the editorial process for the season.

Couple these updates with the fact that we know the voice cast was back in the recording studio in December 2023, and that would mean season 2 will have been in development for at least a year by December 2024. By this timeline, should the show need another 6 months, that would mean it should be complete in time for a 2025 release date on Disney+.

Should production indeed wrap by early to mid-2025, we can’t see Disney wanting to sit on the series and make fans wait until 2026 for the next season, especially given its popularity and the award buzz it garnered.

While there is always a chance that this rumor could end up being true and that X-Men '97 season 2 won't arrive until 2026, we're not yet sold on the report and will need to hear from a more reputable scooper before worrying too much about the show being delayed to 2026.
