Adult Swim has given us so many great shows and one of those is Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law which ended up giving us the spinoff: Birdgirl.
Let's start with the most obvious thing. If you haven't watched Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, it's unlikely you'll know what's going on in Birdgirl. However, if you're caught up with the series and know some of the lore, then it ends up being a pretty solid watch.
Before Harvey Birdman fans come at me, let me say that I've watched and rewatched Harvey Birdman more times than I can count. While Birdgirl isn't even in the same realm, yet it's still a fun series and one that is highly underrated. While it might not appeal to all Harvey fans, it's worth checking out.
The one major difference between Birdgirl and Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law is the run-time of the episodes. Birdgirl episodes are around 23 minutes while Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law has a shorter runtime which isn't the only difference but it's an important detail to note.
Birdgirl is an underrated series from Adult Swim
In watching and rewatching Birdgirl, it's clear the show doesn't have the same charm as its predecessor. Regardless, the show has a great group of characters, including Birdgirl, aka Judy, Gillian, Meredith the Mind Taker, Charley, and Dog with Bucket Hat. While they're not as beloved as the Hanna-Barbera characters we all know, each has a fun relationship with Judy, which always leads to hijinks.
Speaking of characters, the voice acting in the series is great. Paget Brewster returns to voice Birdgirl/Judy, and she doesn't miss a beat. It's just nice to see her getting even more love, as Birdgirl never really got as much love during the original series. She's joined by Negin Farsad, Tony Hale, and Kether Donohue, among others. Honestly, the voice acting is pretty solid.
While things can be a bit absurd, Birdgirl relies more on real-world situations, and part of that is Judy trying to keep her Birdgirl identity secret. Honestly, that's one of the highlights of the show and something I couldn't help but chuckle at. If you're craving a good office comedy with loads of absurd moments, then you'll like Birdgirl. With only 12 episodes in the show's two seasons, this is a great weekend watch if you're stuck inside with the cold.
Seasons 1 and 2 of Birdgirl are currently streaming on Max.
