DC Comics has given us some great animated shows and one of those is Harley Quinn. The one thing the show has continued to do is not care and I mean that in the best way.
While some have ideas of what Harley is like, the show truly embodies her as someone who is human first and then a villain and sometimes, a hero. Honestly, Harley falls more into the antihero role, and pairing her with Poison Ivy is perfection.
Going into season 5, it was already teased that the two would be making a move to Metropolis. The way the episode unfolded though, it felt like something fun and fresh. Sometimes, it can feel like a gimmick, but moving Harley and Ivy to the Metropolis gives the show so much more to work with and so many more characters to bring into the fold.
Before talking about anything else, I'm going to try to keep it spoiler-free if you haven't watched the season 5 premiere of Harley Quinn. However, there might be some slight spoilers so be aware of that before reading on.
Season 5 of Harley Quinn is exactly what the show needed.
From the start, it's clear the show and its writers knew what we were all thinking. With how everything went down in Gotham and the last season, it didn't leave a lot to work with. That's why it was so smart to include Harley and Ivy basically being on vacation from life. The two didn't want to do anything aside from hang out with each other and as great as that is, it doesn't exactly make for the entertainment we were all hoping for.
By sending them to Metropolis, the two were able to figure out what they needed as far as their careers and hopefully, get a fresh start. Pairing Ivy up with Lena Luthor is even better as she already took Lex's place last season. It'll be interesting to see how Ivy works with Lena and if it'll end up just as disastrous as her interactions with Lex were. Looking at Harley, it's unclear what she's going to do next. Maybe she'll end up getting back to her alter ego and help out some of the heroes who are in Metropolis.
Ultimately, the thing I loved most about this episode was seeing the Gotham City Sirens in action. For those who don't know, the group was made up of Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and Batgirl, or Oracle as she's called. Seeing how the four clashed made for an entertaining scene and gave us that little taste we had hoped for at the end of season 4.
Given how season 4 ended, it'll be interesting to see if the rest of the Bat Family will learn Harley's secret and if that storyline will continue into season 5. Either way, it's amazing to see Harley Quinn back on our screen and see the show trying something new. We can only hope that we get news about the renewal of Kite Man: Hell Yeah! before the season wraps up.
Harley Quinn is currently streaming on Max.
