Cutaway gags on Family Guy are just as important as Peter’s shenanigans and Brian and Stewie’s friendship. The gags represent a point in the story without making sense, but add an extra dose of humor to the conversation.

There have been many awesome cutaways over the past years since Family Guy premiered in 1999. was even a season 19 episode named “CutawayLand.” Peter and Lois find themselves trapped in various cutaways, including ones from seasons past. It’s a nice niche to revisit Family Guy’s earlier success and how far the show has evolved.

Here are five memorable cutaways that made us laugh and highlighted the point without intention. I for, one, enjoy Seth MacFarlane’s unique material, as do many other fans. The gags don’t have to make sense; they just have to be funny and finish the story.

5 freakin’ sweet cutaway gags from Family Guy

The first chicken fight

Season 2

The infamous chicken fight began when Peter received an expired coupon from a giant chicken. It obviously ticked him off, and the two wind up in a plummeting fist fight across the world. This would not be the last fight between Peter and the poultry, as many more will soon follow.

Peter narrates his own life

Season 2

To emphasize that Chris is going through a normal teenage phase, Brian recalls the time when Peter went through a phase of his own when he narrated the details of his life. At first, it’s funny, because he’s viewing the world through his bespectacled eyes. When he starts to insult Lois, that’s when it’s not as funny, and knocks him out.

Maybe try praising your wife instead of insulting her Peter?

Robert Loggia at the airport

Season 5

Imagine standing behind that one guy at the airport who takes an eternity with the agent. The situation gets even worse when the guy feels he has to spell out his name and emphasize each letter with an egotistical description.

Such as the case with Peter when he’s behind the actor, Robert Loggia. He knows he’s going to be late for his flight, and he’s obviously annoyed. Of course, there’s nothing he can do about it, as Loggia has much of a right to be at the airport for his travel needs. I do sympathize with Peter, as I was behind people who too more time than they should have and was very anxious about it.

Brian farts himself awake

Season 7

I personally love this cutaway as it reminds me so much of my late dog, Lucy, who used to sleep soundly until she relieved gas and went crazy, making her wake up in confusion. Brian shares the same attribute with her, and like Brian, it was the funniest thing ever. And don’t forget that Brian is still very much a dog with canine tendencies, so his reaction is perfectly normal.

Brian barks at his own reflection

Season 8

In another Brian cutaway, the Labrador catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror and not realizing that it’s his reflection, has a barking reaction. This behavior is typical for most dogs, but in Brian’s view, ir’s hilarious. Here’s a dog who’s supposed to have an above average IQ (though that might be exaggerated), and he pulls this shenanigan.

But you know what they say, “like human, like dog.”

You can watch all of these cutaways and more when you stream Family Guy on Hulu!
