The FOX Animation Domination Block looked slightly different from the late 1990s to the early 2010s, as shows other than The Simpsons and Family Guy once had scheduled Sunday spots. It's hard to imagine, but it's true.
Three of the shows found their way into the streaming world, with one being nearly erased into oblivion. Looking back and doing the shortest rewatch in history, I don't even know how FOX green-lit it for broadcasting. I'm all for creating a heartfelt project, with hopes that it will be something that will be enjoyed, but when the show lacks any drive and is just plain "cringe," for lack of a better world, it fails to serve the network.
With that being said, these four adult animated comedies were once the stars of Animation Domination.
FOX's Animation Domination had these 4 animated comedies on their Block
King of the Hill
(1997-2009)
Set in Arlan, Texas, King of the Hill centers on a middle-class, blue-collar family man, Hank Hill. In the series, Hank tries to be the voice of reason when his family comprises his wife Peggy, 13-year-old eccentric son Bobby, Bloodhound Lady Bird, and niece Luann. Later, Luann's partner, who becomes her husband, and their daughter, Gracie, join in and tend to get out of whelms with their thinking. The same mentality applies to Hank's friends, who are just a bit out of the loop.
The situations and storylines of King of the Hill made it one of TV's greatest animated shows. It's about as authentic as The Simpsons, as these shows don't pull off any bull.
Hulu has a King of the Hill revival that will debut later this year and be set to current times. We'll see updates from the Hill family and their neighbors. In the meantime, all 13 seasons can be streamed on Hulu, with reruns on the FXX network and Adult Swim.
Futurama
1999-present
Futurama was created by Matt Groening, set on futuristic Earth in the year 3,000, after Fry, a 20-something-year-old Gen X'er from 1999, is accidently frozen and thawed a thousand years later. In his new life, he meets his nephew, cyborg Leela, and best friend Bender, who happens to be a robot and several unusual but well-developed characters.
Together, the group embarks on fantastical journeys and quests out of this world. even did a crossover with The Simpsons.
The series was immensely a fan favorite and after it was cancelled by FOX, Comedy Central saved it. After Futurama lost its home on that network, it landed on Hulu, where it now remains, with season continuation. Episodes can also be watched on FXX.
Allen Gregory
2011-2012
This is the show that was very short-lived and was canceled after seven episodes. Allan Gregory chronicled a 7-year-old boy who had the pampered life of being homeschooled and enrolled in the public school system due to a faltering economy. While that was commonplace for many students, Allan Gregory still carried his aloofness to his classmates and school personnel.
Jonah Hill created Allan Gregory, and while I appreciated that he took the risk in that direction, Allan Gregory, unfortunately, was a mess from the get-go. The only upside to the show was that Allan's parents were gay, and it shed the smallest fraction of light on same-sex couples raising kids together.
You'll only find episodes on YouTube, and no other streaming service.
The Cleveland Show
2009-2013
Another Seth MacFarlane original, The Cleveland Show, is the 4-season spinoff of Family Guy, but instead of Peter being the spotlight, it focused on Cleveland Brown. The storylines were similar to Family Guy, except that the Brown family was located in Stoolbend, VA, instead of Quahog, RI.
And like nearly every one of MacFarlane's animations, The Cleveland Show opener has a musical number. It wasn't as catchy as Family Guy's but had a nice tune and "even a bear." So that was one good thing about the theme song.
Despite being a halfway decent show, The Cleveland Show was never a rating favorite and was canceled due to a dipping rating. However, it aired on Adult Swim, BET, TBS, and Comedy Central before having a three-hour block on FXX. In 2024, the network removed it from its schedule.
All four seasons can be streamed on Hulu.
